Today, we have released version 4.2.1 of Simple:Press for WordPress. This is a recommended upgrade for all users at includes an important security fix as well as some other bug fixes against the 4.2.0 release. You can see all the changes that went into v4.2.1 on our Mantis Bug Tracker page for 4.2.1.

With this release, we can now focus our attention on v4.3.0 which will primarily be a compatibility release with the upcoming WP 3.0 version which includes the long awaited (or feared) merger of WP and WPMU. It should be noted that when v4.3 hits the streets, it will require WP version 3.0. We are aiming to have a beta version of SPF 4.3 available when WP 3.0 hits beta.

Of course, as we work the compatibility release, we will continue to support the 4.2.x series also and will make patches available in the patch forum and will still release a new version if warranted.

Once the compatibility release is done, we will turn our focus to v5.0 which, according to plans, will include the long awaited switch to a templating system instead of skins and an API for SPF plugins, plus a few other surprises. Of course plans can change, but that’s the path we have charted.

We hope you enjoy v4.2.1 and as always, stop on by the support forum if you have any issues, questions or suggestions.

The Release Candidate 1 version of Simple:Press 4.2.0 is now available for download!

Hopefully we picked up all the major issues that have shown up in the beta versions. The second beta turned out to be particularly stable so we have moved the next version up to a release candidate. If all goes well with the release candidate version, hopefully, 4.2.0 will go Gold in a week or two. Its worth mentioning that one significant change in the release candidate is all (well, almost all) of the SPF js and css files are now compacted/minimized.

Please remember this is still release candidate software. Download the ‘readme’ file and backup before installing. And thanks for using Simple:Press Forum.

We released Beta 2 of our forthcoming version 4.2 the other day and then both forgot to write a quick blog post!
Hopefully we picked up all the major issues that the first beta round showed up. We particularly want to get the Install and Upgrade routines less likely to fail which they have on a very small number of users in the past. Please report on the 4.2 Beta support forum any problems you may encounter in this area.

It would actually be nice to hear from people who do NOT have any problems! Support forums tend to just get filled by those encountering issues which can sometimes give us the false impression that nothing works. So if you have installed or upgraded to 4.2 beta and all went smoothly then it would be good to hear from you as well.

Please remember this is still beta software. Download the ‘readme’ file and backup before installing. And thanks for using Simple:Press Forum.

We are pleased to announce the Beta 1 Release of Simple:Press Forum 4.2. We invite the SPF community to join in the testing of this beta release software. Curious about what’s coming in SPF 4.2? Be sure to read our 4.2 Preview post.

If you are planning on using this beta release it is important that you read all of the notes in the README file on the 4.1 Beta 1 Download page below BEFORE replacing your current version or activating the plugin. A summary of those notes is included below.

  • This release is BETA software. This means there may be, and probably will be, bugs! We take no responsibility for any problems or loss of data that may occur by the use of this release but we have worked hard to try and ensure this does not happen. We have been running various alpha/beta versions of 4.2 on our support forum since October, so we do have confidence in the beta version, but we cannot replicate all the various server and spf configurations of the community.
  • The purpose of beta releases is to involve the user community in testing out new features. It is your opportunity to help us deliver a stable and usable release. If you find problems then please tell us by using the new support forum we have set up for 4.2 beta. Only by telling us can we sort out the problems. The more folks that participate in the beta program, the better the gold release will be.
  • Make a full database BACKUP immediately prior to upgrading to 4.2 Beta 1. Sometimes the only solution is to restore a backup. it is not our fault if one has not been made!
  • Simple:Press Forum Version 4.2 requires WordPress version 2.8+.

We anticipate that there will be 2 or 3 Beta versions of software as we address any issues that might arise. There will also likely be at a Release Candidate version before the Gold release of V4.2. If all goes well, the Gold version should be available in mid to late February.

We have set up a special forum to address SPF 4.2 Beta issues or questions that might arise during the SPF 42 Beta test program. You can grab the the beta version on our Simple:Press Forum V4.2 Beta 1 Download Page.

As usual, any and all feedback is welcome! We are excited about v4.2 as it continues are progress and vision that we have for Simple:Press Forum.

Simple:Press Forum V4.1.3 is now available for download. This release is primarily a security release and is recommended for ALL users of SPF. A couple of potential security issues have arisen and we wanted to get those holes plugged as quickly as possible. This release does contain a few minor bug fixes for a couple of 4.1.2 issues but does not address all the 4.1.2 issues.

We are still hoping to have the V4.2.0 beta release available in the next week or so which addresses all of the 4.1.2 issues plus includes some nifty new features. However, taking care of this security release has set us back a few day. You can read all about the pending 4.2 features in our 4.2 features announcement.

We apologize for the inconvenience of a security update, but feel its important to help keep the users of SPF protected. As always, please visit us in the support forum if you have any issues or questions.
